Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Saturday 4/30

New, comments

When the season began, I think we all hoped that the 24 games the Cubs would play in April would find them finishing the month today with a record somewhere around 15-9.

One game's been postponed till later, so today is the twenty-third game, and a win gets the Cubs to 13-10 -- not bad, I say, considering the starting DP combination has been hurt for most of it and the bullpen's been in shambles.

Tonight, the Cubs (this time for sure!) go for their third win in a row; it would be the first such streak of the season (ignore that stuff I wrote yesterday about such things, I must have been too giddy from that Jeromy Burnitz HR).

Yuck. Just looking at those numbers, you'd expect a hitter-friendly evening. But it never seems to work that way. Mr. Wood has some convincing to do to all of us, to show us that he's still the guy who struck out 20 Astros seven years ago. Only Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio and Brad Ausmus remain from that 1998 Astros team (and Ausmus left for two years and returned). Discuss amongst yourselves.
