Open Thread: Cubs vs. Yankees, Friday 6/16

NEW YORK -- I have been to Cub road games in eleven current (and one former, Montreal) NL cities and five AL cities, including a Bicentennial July 4 doubleheader at Shea Stadium.

But Yankee Stadium is special -- it's got history, it's got rabid fans, it's got some of the best players in the game ... and somehow, this series has a playoff feel, even though both teams have struggled so far this year.

I'll be in the bleachers Friday and Sunday. I have been told to notify my next-of-kin, but I will be in the company of a friendly Yankee fan, so I believe I will live to report to you later.

I met quite a few Cub fans on the flight here, and handed out some BCB cards, so if you are here for the first time from one of those cards, welcome!

Today's Starting Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
C. Zambrano
Cubs
vs. Carl Pavano
C. Pavano
Yankees
4-3 W-L 4-5
3.19 ERA 4.17
83 SO 46
34 BB 15
9 HR 14

Note the large number of homers (14) allowed by Pavano. Given that, and the short RF porch in Yankee Stadium, and expect Dusty to stack the lineup with lefthanded hitters tonight.

Finally, my SportsBLOGS colleague Larry over at Viva El Birdos, the Cardinals site, has taken my entry from yesterday on the Cubs' upcoming schedule and done a detailed analysis of the Cardinals' schedule in comparison with the Cubs'.

I don't necessarily agree with his conclusion, but it's worth reading.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
