Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Sunday 7/24

Where have we been?

I know it's starting to sound like "the dog ate my homework", but the servers crashed. Again. It wasn't only BCB, all of the sites of SB Nation were down, apparently from approximately midnight CT to 10 am CT, today.

I have been assured by those in charge that they are going to get to the bottom of this. Believe me, it frustrates me just as much as it does you! However, computers are machines, and thus, can break down, mostly when you least want them to.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Mark Prior
M. Prior
Cubs
vs. Jeff Suppan
J. Suppan
Cardinals
7-3 W-L 9-7
3.15 ERA 4.22
95 SO 59
27 BB 34
11 HR 15

Suppan is the Cardinals' fifth starter, but still has decent numbers. Nevertheless, I like this matchup, and taking two of three from the Cardinals ought to give the Cubs real confidence, not to mention the standings boost, coming into the homestand starting Monday.

Finally, there is a fascinating article in today's Tribune all about Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, one of my childhood heroes.

Among other things in this article, I learned:

  • that Ernie's mother, age 93, is still living in his hometown, Dallas. If her age is accurate, that would debunk the rumors that I have heard in recent years, that Ernie is really six years older than he claims to be; and
  • that Ernie is a second cousin of O. J. Simpson.
