3000 strikeouts.

That major milestone may be attained by Greg Maddux tonight, if he strikes out at least two Giants. I say "may" because Greg can be effective even if he doesn't strike out anyone.

The last time a milestone of this magnitude was achieved at Wrigley Field was 35 years ago, May 12, 1970, when Ernie Banks hit his 500th home run. Before that, it was Stan Musial's 3000th hit, on May 13, 1958 off Moe Drabowsky.

It's not May, but I do think we'll see this tonight.

Other trivia:

  • The Cubs will become the first team to have two pitchers (Fergie Jenkins, of course, the other) to achieve the 3000th strikeout in their uniform.
  • Maddux will become the first pitcher to get his 300th win and 3000th strikeout against the same team (the Giants).
Today's Starting Pitchers
Greg Maddux
G. Maddux
vs. Noah Lowry
N. Lowry
8-7 W-L 6-10
4.51 ERA 6.93
82 SO 102
21 BB 49
19 HR 17

Oh, and there's a ballgame to win, too. Lowry beat the Cubs in his only start against them last year, but he's been bad on the road this year (4-3, but with a 6.28 ERA and 11 HR allowed in 43 road IP).

And, Nomar plays in Peoria, starting tonight.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
