Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Sunday 9/25

Weather permitting, the Cubs will face the Astros this afternoon.

Speaking of weather, since Hurricane Rita sent its wrath elsewhere than Houston, next weekend's Cubs/Astros series will be played in Minute Maid Park, as scheduled.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Jerome Williams
J. Williams
Cubs
vs. Andy Pettitte
A. Pettitte
Astros
5-9 W-L 17-9
4.39 ERA 2.45
64 SO 161
41 BB 41
13 HR 26

If Williams could start every game in the second inning, he'd be on his way to being a #1 starter. He seems to have trouble out of the gate and then settles down. This is a solvable problem, but it may have to wait till next year to solve.

Pettitte has had a very nice comeback year after his injury-plagued 2004; he's third in the NL in ERA, and just behind Dontrelle Willis for second.

But the Cubs have beaten him like a drum going back to his Yankee days; in four starts he's 0-2 with a 6.62 ERA. I have noticed that citing stats like this for opposing pitchers seems to work better in the Cubs' favor when I'm talking about a veteran, than about a rookie.

One week to go. Enjoy baseball.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
