Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Tuesday 9/27

Apropos of nothing: If the Cubs were in the NL West today, they would be tied for first place.

But they're not.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Greg Maddux
G. Maddux
Cubs
vs. Zach Duke
Z. Duke
Pirates
13-13 W-L 6-2
4.14 ERA 1.94
128 SO 49
34 BB 21
26 HR 2

You all know what's at stake here: Greg Maddux' streak of 15-win seasons. Win today, and have a final shot at it on the last day of the season, a game which could be very meaningful for the Astros.

These two met on July 16 at Wrigley Field, Maddux throwing a nice game (8 IP, 3 ER), but the kid outdueled the master, and the Pirates won 3-0.

That was one of only three games the Pirates have won against the Cubs in 14 tries this year; one of the others was another Maddux start on April 23, one of the famous two-out Hawkins blown-save specials.

The Cubs ought to sweep this baby two-game series, and enter the final weekend at .500.

And yes, I want that very much.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
