Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants, Thursday 9/8

If the Giants were in the NL Central, they'd be in sixth place. Behind the Reds.

But they're not. They're "six" all right, six games out of first place, which qualifies them for "contention" in a division which still could be won by a team with a losing record.

Thus, we find ourselves in a quasi-important game tonight.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
C. Zambrano
Cubs
vs. Noah Lowry
N. Lowry
Giants
12-5 W-L 12-11
3.16 ERA 3.71
174 SO 153
75 BB 67
14 HR 18

Lowry's been one of the best pitchers in the NL since the All-Star break. He was Greg Maddux' opponent the day Greg got his 3000th strikeout; he threw five scoreless innings and got a no-decision, and also pitched well against the Cubs in SF last year. He's lefthanded, so Matt Murton ought to get another start tonight.

Z's also been terrific since the ASB, going 6-1, and his ERA since August 1 is 2.39 (would have been lower except for the last game he threw in Pittsburgh, which the Cubs won anyway).

Discuss amongst yourselves.
