Open Thread: Cubs vs. Nationals, Tuesday 5/16, 7:05 CT

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy -- Warren Zevon

Tonight's "Excitable Boy" matchup features Carlos Zambrano and Livan Hernandez.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Carlos Zambrano
C. Zambrano
Cubs
vs. Livan Hernandez
L. Hernandez
Nationals
1-2 W-L 1-4
3.88 ERA 6.52
54 SO 34
33 BB 17
6 HR 11
vs. Wash -- vs. Cubs
Z is pretty good against these guys, except vs. yet another "excitable boy", Jose Guillen, who's 4-for-11 against him.

It might be a good night to start John Mabry -- Mabry is 12-for-21 (.571) lifetime vs. Livan, with two doubles, two HR and no K's. Hernandez has been successful against the Cubs in his career, winning three of his last four starts at Wrigley Field, posting a 1.67 ERA over 32 1-3 innings and pitching at least eight innings on each occasion. Memorably, in this August 2001 game, in which Barry Bonds hit his 50th HR of that now-likely-tainted season, Hernandez was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a HR himself, and was in the middle of a streak of eight straight hits.

No more of that sort of nonsense.

Thought I'd also mention this, passed along by BCB reader ballstitch (who lives in Champaign), about the bizarre reasons that many of you won't be able to watch tonight's game:

If you recall, the first WCIU game of the year produced a lengthy diary about TV blackout issues. Then ESPN carried the game using a new rule that allows them to lift the local blackout 3 times per year per team.

Well, the last WCIU game went back to the norm ... those of us in a claimed zip code that don't receive WCIU (due to distance) got no game.

As you suggested, I emailed WGN about the situation where a crescent of folks in between local over the air broadcast range and out of market zip codes are getting hosed. I received no reply.

Just thought I'd let you know. It was on my mind because I and everyone else in the downstate claimed ZIPs will miss tonight's game as it is on WCIU. This has to affect parts of Iowa and Indiana as well.

So I'll be watching the Cardinals. You'd think that would make someone lift an eyebrow.

The reason he can't watch, he explained further, is:
I am claimed by the Cubs [as part of their territory] so I will be blacked out of the Extra Innings feed for sure since I never get them on that package. I expect that though and I don't blame EI since I receive Comcast Sports Net Chicago as my regional sports net.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
