Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Wednesday 5/3, 8:40 CT

I hate to sound overconfident, but the Cubs really ought to win this one, given the matchup:

Today's Starting Pitchers
Greg Maddux
G. Maddux
Cubs
vs. Miguel Batista
M. Batista
D'backs
5-0 W-L 2-1
1.35 ERA 6.33
24 SO 24
6 BB 11
1 HR 2
vs. Ariz -- vs. Cubs
And, I believe this to be true even though Maddux has absolutely sucked in his career vs. Arizona: 1-8 with a 4.97 ERA, and six straight losses.

Maddux ought to pitch around Luis Gonzalez, who has 10 career HR in 98 AB vs. Greg. Shawn Green has hit .429 vs. Maddux in 28 career AB.

If Maddux does win, he will become the first Cub pitcher to go 6-0 since... 1908. No, really. Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown went 11-0 that year. And if Dusty wants to play matchups, tonight is the night to start Neifi. Lifetime: 9-for-21 vs. Batista, with three walks, two doubles and a triple and four RBI.

Finally, it is to be announced later today that the Washington Nationals will at last have a real owner, DC-area real estate developer Ted Lerner. My SB Nation colleague Basil over at Federal Baseball says this is a good thing.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
