Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres, Monday 5/8, 9:05 CT

As discussed in this diary, it appears that Ryan Theriot has been recalled from Iowa. No corresponding roster move has yet been announced; speculation includes removal of Freddie Bynum, Michael Restovich or Roberto Novoa.

UPDATE [2006-5-8 17:54:33 by Al]: Theriot has been added to the 25-man roster listed on the Cubs website. But no one has yet been removed -- there are 26 names listed.

I wonder if Jim Hendry read Bruce Miles in the Daily Herald today; he advocated Theriot's recall, and also recalling Felix Pie. But, he also wrote:

Is it too late to salvage this season? Heck, no. Pitcher Kerry Wood should be back in about 10 days, and [Derrek] Lee will be back eventually. If the Cubs can stay remotely close, Hendry has a good track record of making in-season moves.

It?s tough to make trades at this point in the season, but Hendry can still make a statement or two.

Now would be a good time.

Hear, hear. My thoughts exactly.

After all the Barry Bonds angst today -- and the Cubs won't even face him till tomorrow -- let's talk about tonight's matchup.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Greg Maddux
G. Maddux
Cubs
vs. Chris Young
C. Young
Padres
5-1 W-L 2-1
2.35 ERA 3.53
29 SO 30
6 BB 14
2 HR 6
vs. SD -- vs. Cubs
Only two current Cubs have ever faced Young, who came to the Padres from the Rangers. Jacque Jones is 0-for-8 vs. Young, which means he'll probably be hitting cleanup tonight.

Maddux has been hurt in the past by Brian Giles and Vinny Castilla, but he'll probably enjoy pitching in Petco Park. The Cubs haven't been swept by the Padres since September 4-6, 1992.

Let's keep it that way.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
