Open Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Thursday 6/29, 1:20 CT

There were a few signs of life in the corpse of the 2006 Cubs yesterday. Meaningful or not, it'd be nice to see that continue this afternoon.

One note from yesterday: Juan Pierre's HR was his first since July 7, 2005, also against the Brewers. The only other team Pierre has homered more than once against is the Padres.

Today's Starting Pitchers

0-2 W-L 0-0
9.64 ERA 6.08

vs. Mil -- vs. Cubs
Remember this Brewers pitcher? He used to be "Jeremi" Gonzalez, in a "Bob Clemente" way of trying to Anglicize his true name, which is "Geremis". So, now he's "Geremi". He was to the Cubs, back in 1997, when he was 22, what Mark Prior is now.

Gonzalez got hurt after having a good rookie year for a bad team and trying to pitch through it the following year; he's now on his fourth team in the last three years. This will be his first start for the Brewers. He's faced very few of the current Cubs. Jacque Jones homered in his only at-bat vs. Jeremi. Er, I mean Geremis. Or Geremi...

Prior's ERA is unsightly, but it's actually almost eight runs LOWER than it was after his first start. He threw pretty well against the Twins last Saturday.
