Open Thread: Cubs vs. White Sox, Friday 6/30, 1:20 CT

Here's a scary thought.

Jon Garland was traded to the White Sox eight years ago, in one of the dumbest Ed Lynch deals ever, for a guy who's been out of baseball for six years. He's been an established starter for more than four years, and won 18 games last year.

And he's only three years older than Sean Marshall.

vs. Sox -- vs. Cubs

That said about Garland, he really hasn't pitched very well this year, despite the 6-3 record. He's been inconsistent -- one good start, two bad ones, then another good one. The 19 HR are a bit encouraging (from a Cub standpoint) but he has not allowed one in his last three starts. He's 2-4 lifetime vs. the Cubs with a 5.18 ERA, and Jacque Jones hits him well (17-for-50, 2 2B, 1 HR).

Oh yes, Michael Barrett will return from his suspension today. It'll be interesting to hear the reaction when A. J. Pierzynski's name is announced.

Finally, the Sox are hot (17-5 since June 5). The Cubs are not (6-16 since June 5). This series should be a mismatch, but it is often the team that's down that plays better (1997 Cubs, 1998 White Sox) when these two teams meet.
