Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Tuesday 6/6, 7:05 CT

O, joy!

Tonight, the Cubs go for their third two-game winning streak in the last week.

More importantly, they have won five of their last seven. It may not ultimately mean anything, but it sure beats watching them lose every night or afternoon.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Kerry Wood
K. Wood
vs. Wandy Rodriguez
W. Rodriguez
1-1 W-L 6-3
4.50 ERA 4.81
13 SO 46
6 BB 34
4 HR 8
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Preston Wilson has handled Wood pretty well -- 4-for-10 with a HR -- but otherwise Kerry matches up well with this club. Only Craig Biggio remains from the Houston team that Wood had his 20-K game against -- eight years ago. Doesn't seem that long ago, but it is. Wood has thrown better each time out, and most importantly, didn't walk anyone in his last outing.

With the lefty Rodriguez going, expect Phil Nevin in the lineup at first base tonight. Nevin has never faced Rodriguez. Matt Murton should also return -- and he has faced Rodriguez. Eight at-bats worth. Three hits, two of which were homers. The Cubs, with 81 HR at the Juice Box, have hit more than any other visiting team. Rodriguez' ERA was 3.02 after he beat the Dodgers on May 11. He's been hit pretty hard in the four starts since, and has walked 18 and has a 10.26 ERA in those starts.

As noted in one of the comments this morning, those of you who are numerologists may attribute some "devilish" significance to today's date -- 06/06/06. MLB's schedulemakers had to be thinking about this when they scheduled the Devil Rays and Angels to play on this date.

Too bad Jim Gott and Tim Teufel aren't active players any more. FWIW, during their careers, Gott was 2-for-9 against Teufel with a HR.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
