Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Wednesday 7/19, 7:05 CT

Most of this season has been one that has been worth watching only through hands covering our eyes.

Tonight, you should pause and watch, because matchups like this don't happen very often, and may never again.

Doesn't matter that Greg Maddux isn't what he used to be, or that Roger Clemens has been inconsistent in his five starts.

They are the greatest pitchers of their generation and sure Hall of Famers. It'll be worth watching, and who knows, maybe one of them -- hopefully Maddux -- will put up a retro performance, one that will remind us of the brilliance of his career.

That is, if it doesn't rain.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Greg Maddux
G. Maddux
vs. Roger Clemens
R. Clemens
7-10 W-L 1-3
4.60 ERA 2.96
68 SO 22
22 BB 8
13 HR 2
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
As first noted in this diary, Maddux had his ERA lowered by 0.39 today because of a scoring change in the May 24 game vs. the Marlins -- a change that is in my mind absolutely correct. Good for Greg.

Clemens is 4-3 lifetime vs. the Cubs with a 3.20 ERA, hardly dominant, and he's been, as I said, inconsistent this year -- the Astros have won only one of his five starts.

This is the third meeting of these two great pitchers; one on April 29 of last year resulted in a 3-2 Cub win; they also met on June 3, 2000, when Maddux was a Brave and Clemens a Yankee; neither pitched well that day and neither got a decision.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
