Undoubtedly, you have heard about Derrek Lee's return to the DL; discuss further in this diary.

In the meantime, the games go on, and it's rematch time!

These two faced each other on July 14 at Wrigley Field, won by Trachsel in another one of those maddening games where the Cubs have that one... bad... inning... that ruins everything.

vs. NY -- vs. Cubs
I'm tired of saying this so maybe it'll happen tonight. Maddux -- who has now lost six straight and hasn't won since June 9 at Cincinnati -- still needs one more win to catch Eddie Plank for twelfth place on the all-time wins list. One thing I did not realize is that Carlos Delgado, usually a hit machine, is only 1-for-18 lifetime vs. Maddux. Michael Barrett, who's hot right now anyway, is 8-for-20 vs. Trachsel.

The time of the earlier Trachsel/Maddux matchup was 2:32 -- shorter than most Trachsel starts this year, although it was lengthened by a 45-minute rain delay (a REAL rain delay, not a human one). No such potential problem in New York tonight -- it should be a gorgeous night for baseball.

Maybe what would help would be for Maddux to change his name to "Carlos". According to the Cubs press notes (this researched by Cub historian and fellow SABR member Ed Hartig), ten of the last 14 wins registered by Cub starting pitchers (dating back to June 5) have been by pitchers named "Carlos" (seven for Z, three for Marmol). The other four were one for Maddux, one for Glendon Rusch, and two for Sean Marshall; Bob Howry has the only relief win since June 5.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
