Open Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Tuesday 9/5, 7:05 CT

It's the Big Battle For Last Place!

Loser gets the prize of being the only sixth-place team in the majors.

Also, the Cubs must win all three remaining games in this series to avoid losing the season series to the Pirates for the first time since 2000, AND if the Pirates win tonight, it'll be the first time since 1990 that they've won five straight games in one season at Wrigley Field.

Wow, I can't believe they aren't lined up around the block for tickets to this amazing matchup!

vs. Pit -- vs. Cubs
And, wouldn't you know it, for this crucial last-place game, we get a pitching rematch of last Wednesday's ridiculous 10-9 Pirates win in Pittsburgh.

So, what is there to say about this game that I didn't say then?

Notes: the Cubs have now lost 14 of their last 17 games, after going 18-14 in their first 32 after the All-Star break. Also, they have received minor league RHP Adam Harben from the Twins as the PTBNL in the Phil Nevin deal; for more on this and other moves today see this diary.

Finally, you will see a new section (if you haven't noticed it already) today on the right sidebar: "Recommended Diaries". You can now "recommend" a diary, meaning you think it's worth special attention; there are voting buttons on each diary page. Recommended diaries will appear in the order of the number of votes they get. No, you can't stuff the ballot box by recommending your own diaries!
