Open Thread: Cubs vs. Padres, Thursday 5/24, 9:05 CT

In continuation of my "I Hate San Diego" theme of this morning, I am going to turn over this part of the game post to the San Diego Smooth Jazz Man, who has lived in SD for over 20 years, and who emailed me this:

Now that they are winning again, there's an air of cockiness.

Very true. "Dodgers Suck" T shirts are very popular, and of course, I had to see the damn "Cubbuster" T shirts for freakin' years.

I go to plenty of games, but -- as an observer of baseball. I don't give a damn if the Padres win. I give my freebees away. I've only held onto the retro caps, which sit in the closet.

If that poster had endured what I, your friends, AND you had to put up with (but you were able to go home while I had to put up with the constant bashing for years afterward) he might change his mind.

In 1989 -- at Candlestick -- the Giants fans didn't even know we were there. They were enjoying their own team. In fact, I had nice conversations with many of them. After game 4, I had to return (missing the Monday loss) and after the game, one group of Giants fans were very complimentary of the Cubs. In winning, they were gracious -- and no teddy bears were set on fire, dragged behind cars, etc etc.

Can't wait for the "Wrigley" "Petco" comparison. That'll have me on the edge of their seat.

Damn, I want the Cubs to salvage the last game of this series. Bad. Good thing we have one of our GOOD starting pitchers going tonight. And who would have guessed THAT at the beginning of the season?
Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Chris Young
C. Young
Padres
5-1 W-L 5-3
2.76 ERA 2.89
29 SO 43
17 BB 23
4 HR 3
vs. SD -- vs. Cubs
Marquis is the only Cub pitcher to have defeated the Padres since 2005. That's right, since they were 0-7 against them in 2006. He threw six good innings in a 12-4 win at Wrigley Field on April 16.

Chris Young has made two career starts vs. the Cubs and is 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA. Alfonso Soriano has doubled and homered against him. It's about time he started to double and homer against someone.

It's on CSN, CH4 San Diego, Extra Innings and at the Mediacenter.
