Cubs Minor League Wrap -- August 16

No Cub pitcher above rookie ball allowed a run today.

Iowa Cubs (62-59)

The Iowa Cubs shut out the Tacoma Raniers, 4-0.

Starter James Russell picked up his third win for the I-Cubs this afternoon. He went five innings and allowed four hits and two walks. Russell struck out five.

John Gaub entered the game in the ninth when Vince Perkins got into trouble and picked up his first save. He retired both batters he faced, one by strikeout.

Center fielder Matt Camp went 2 for 5 with two RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

Had the day off.

Daytona Cubs (20-27)

The Daytona Cubs blanked the Dunedin Blue Jays, 1-0.

Jay Jackson continues to dominate as he serves his penance. Today he went 6.2 innings and allowed only four hits. Jackson didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Luke Sommer threw the final 2.1 innings for the save. He allowed two hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out two.

Third baseman Josh Vitters was all the offense today, as his solo home run in the sixth inning was it for the scoring. Vitters was 1 for 4. It was his first home run in the Florida State League.

Right fielder Brandon Guyer was 2 for 4. Left fielder Jonathan Wyatt went 2 for 3.

Peoria Chiefs (29-20)

The Chiefs blasted the Quad City River Bandits, 15-0.

Starter Justin Bristow went six innings, allowing only two hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four.

Center fielder Brett Jackson had a huge game, hitting a home run and a double in a 4 for 6 effort. Jackson scored three times and had three RBI. In only 17 games in Peoria, Jackson already has five home runs.

Left fielder Nelson Perez was also 4 for 6. He had two RBI and one run scored. Shortstop DJ LeMahieu was 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman Junior Lake was 3 for 5 with a double. Lake scored three runs.

Third baseman Ryan Flaherty popped out home run #18 today. It was a solo home run in the third inning. Flaherty was 2 for 3 with a double

Boise Hawks

Also took a day of rest on Sunday.

Are losing 8-0 to the Padres as I write this. I will update the score tomorrow. Or not.
