Cubs Minor League Wrap -- May 9

A happy mother's day to my mother, my mother-in-law and my wife. And to all the mothers who are reading this and to the mothers of all the players in the minor league system. There was no excuse for the Tennessee Smokies and the Daytona Cubs to have not called their moms today since they had the day off.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs made the Oklahoma RedHawks blue, 6-1.

Mitch Atkins made his first start of the year a good one, as he allowed only one run on a solo home run over five innings. Atkins gave up three total hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Blake Parker had a two-inning save for his first save of the season. Parker gave up two hits but no runs. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one.

DH Marquez Smith hit his first home run of the year today. It was a fourth-inning solo shot. He also had a double in a 3 for 4 game. Smith scored twice and had two RBI.

Third baseman Chad Tracy went 4 for 5 with a double. Right fielder James Adduci was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

Shortstop Darwin Barney returned to his red-hot ways by going 3 for 5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs got humiliated by the Kane County Cougars, 15-6.

Starting pitcher Su-Ming Jung got rocked for six runs on seven hits over four innings. Jung walked two and struck out three.

The Chiefs were losing this one 15-1 before they scored five garbage runs in the top of the ninth. First baseman Justin Bour was 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. DH Richard Jones went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Right fielder Francisco Guzman was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.
