While leaving today's 12-0 Cubs loss to the Reds, I ran into Ballhawk Ken outside at the corner of Waveland and Kenmore, his usual haunt.
Throwing my arms up in the air, I told him I had no idea what I was going to write to recap this utterly humiliating defeat. At first, he suggested simply putting a large question mark in type several times normal size and nothing else.
While that was a fine idea, I wasn't sure it captured the complete and total demoralization and destruction of our favorite baseball team.
And then I got home and Ken had sent me an email with the perfect recap. I shall post it after the jump -- credit completely to him -- and not bother with any further mention of today's game, since there's really nothing to analyze, except that I feel badly for Ryan Dempster, who pitched well. Obviously, he needed to throw a shutout and hit a home run himself to win (as I suggested yesterday). Lou didn't even show up to make any postgame remarks. Maybe he's finally had enough.
With apologies to the Bard (and Cubs fans everywhere), this slightly paraphrased passage from Macbeth pretty much sums up today's game:
Yesterday, and yesterday, and yesterday, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last out of recorded time; And all our tomorrows have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Cubs are but a walking shadow, a poor team That struts and frets its hour upon the field And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury Signifying nothing.
Discuss.
Or not - it's up to you.
