Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 10

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were cut down by the Portland Beavers, 13-3.

Starter Jeff Samardzija went seven innings and gave up four runs on eight hits. Samardzija walked three and struck out five. He threw 107 pitches tonight, 70 for strikes. His record dropped to 9-2.

David Cales was the real goat tonight, as he gave up seven runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief.

Center fielder Sam Fuld had two triples tonight in four at bats. He scored once.

Shortstop Darwin Barney went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Second baseman Bobby Scales went 2 for 4 with a double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies shut down the Huntsville Stars, 7-1.

It's time we start considering Chris Archer to be the top pitching prospect in the organization. Tonight he pitched seven innings and allowed one hit, a home run to lead off the second inning. Archer walked two and struck out eight. Archer's record since his promotion to Tennessee at the beginning of July is 7-1 and his overall record this season is 14-2 and a 1.97 ERA.

Third baseman Russ Canzler just keeps hitting. Tonight he was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Canzler scored twice and had two RBI.

Center fielder Brandon Guyer was 2 for 4 with three ribbies. First baseman Blake Lalli went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Right fielder Matt Spencer was 2 for 4 and scored once.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were beaten by the Tampa Yankees, 8-3.

Starting pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee got knocked around for five runs on six hits over only three innings. Rhee walked three and struck out two.

First baseman Jake Opitz was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Third baseman Junior Lake was 2 for 4 and scored once. Center fielder David Macias was 2 for 5.

Shortstop DJ LeMahieu had a double in a 2 for 5 game. He's hit .338 since the All-Star Break in the FSL.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs were mugged by the Quad City River Bandits, 6-2 in a game that ended after six innings because of rain.

Starter Su-Ming Jung didn't make it out of the second inning. Jung gave up five runs on three hits over 1.1 innings. I'm guessing the six walks were the problem. Jung did strike out one.

DH DJ Fitzgerald had a double in a 2 for 3 game. He scored once and had one RBI.

Boise Hawks

Didn't play. No, they didn't forfeit. They just had a scheduled travel day.

AZL Cubs

Didn't play either, but they don't travel.
