The Tennessee Smokies buried the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 9-2 to take a 2 games to 1 lead in the best-of-five Southern League Divisional Playoffs.
The Smokies burst to an early lead tonight, and starting pitcher Trey McNutt saw to it that the early lead held up. McNutt pitched five innings and allowed only one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out six.
Marco Carrillo shut down the Diamond Jaxx for three shutout innings. He allowed only one hit. Carrillo walked two and struck out five.
Center fielder Tony Campana got the game off to a roaring start. He lead off the game with an inside-the-park home run. He later got an RBI when he laid down a bunt single with men on first and third and two outs. Campana went 4 for 6 with a stolen base and two runs scored.
The Smokies hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. The first home run was by Russ Canzler with a man on. Canzler was 1 for 5 tonight. Next up was Matt Spencer, whose solo home run gave the Smokies a 9-1 lead. Spencer was 2 for 5.
Shortstop Marwin Gonzalez was a perfect 2 for 2 with two walks. Gonzalez scored once and knocked one in.
The bad news tonight was that catcher Robinson Chirinos was hit in the hand by a pitch and had to leave the game. Chirinos was 2 for 2 with a run scored before he left.
