Cubs vs. Padres Preview, Tuesday 9/28, 9:05 CT: Six Games To Go

I really don't have a whole lot to post about in this game preview. I was going to examine the issue created when David Price and Evan Longoria called out Rays fans for not showing up to games, but ctcoff99 beat me to it with this FanPost. It's an interesting topic and it bears watching to see whether the Rays can even sell out playoff games.

There's no real news about anything else, other than the two races the Padres are in. They're one game behind the Giants in the NL West and half a game behind the Braves in the wild card race. David Pinto at Baseball Musings runs down the possibilities of a three-way tie.

Here's one bit of intriguing news to chew on: star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish, who just turned 24, may be posted this offseason. He'll be pricey, and after the Daisuke Matsuzaka frenzy that got the Red Sox a decidedly average pitcher, maybe too expensive. Still, I'd like to see the Cubs kick the tires on him. Here are his career statistics.

Mat Latos started against the Cubs on August 19 at Wrigley Field and threw seven innings of five-hit ball with 10 strikeouts. That was during the dark times -- just before Lou Piniella's abrupt retirement. The Cubs have been better since then and Latos has been pretty bad in his last three starts, all losses, in which he has posted a 13.94 ERA and 2.61 WHIP. Maybe he's running out of gas in his first full MLB season. Let's hope he's running on empty tonight.

Ryan Dempster also seems to be running on empty; after two very good outings he got absolutely hammered by the Giants in his last start on September 23. He was the only Cub starter who did not throw in the four-game sweep by the Padres at Wrigley Field in August; he has not faced SD since 2009, but in three starts against them since returning to the Cubs rotation in 2008, he's 2-1 in 22.1 innings with a 2.42 ERA.

Today's game is on WGN and 4 San Diego. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.
