There's a brand-new spring training complex officially called "Salt River Fields at Talking Stick", hosting the Diamondbacks and Rockies, who have moved their training base north to the Phoenix area from Tucson this year. It's the first year that all 15 Arizona-based teams are training in the Phoenix area, with no more than an hour's drive in between any of the stadiums.
"Talking Stick" is also the name of a large casino and resort across highway 101 from the spring training complex, thus the name. It's the first spring complex to be built on Native American tribal land, thus the reports that it is "near Scottsdale", since it's not within the city limits. It is just east of Scottsdale, about four or five miles north of the Giants' complex which is more centrally located in Scottsdale. I'm looking forward to seeing this place, where the Cubs will play on Sunday vs. the Diamondbacks, and I'll file a full report from there after that game. (Most of you will be watching the TV game from Las Vegas vs. the Dodgers on Sunday.)
Carlos Zambrano gets the start today, his third of the spring. He'll face a Rockies split squad. Jorge De La Rosa will start for Colorado. Other Rockies scheduled to pitch Tuesday are Clayton Mortenson, Rafael Betancourt, Franklin Morales, Edgmer Escalona, Billy Buckner, and Juan Nicasio. If you need to take a bathroom break during this game, time it for the inning that Betancourt throws -- he's got to be the slowest worker in MLB today. You can probably go and not miss a pitch.
