Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 16

Trivia time, and see if you can figure this out without looking it up. The Cubs US-based minor league teams are in six different leagues. Who are the three major league organizations that do not share a league with the Cubs? Of the three, the Cubs will play two of those teams' parent club in the majors this season. So also identify the one organization the Cubs will completely miss this season.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs flushed out the Reno Aces, 9-6.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx started tonight and pitched the first six innings. He scattered ten hits to allow only three runs. One of the three runs was unearned. Bibens-Dirkx did not walk anyone and struck out one.

Justin Berg got his first save with a scoreless ninth. He hit Wily Mo Pena to lead off the inning, but retired the final three hitters without incident. He did not have a strike out.

Third baseman Marquez Smith hit a two-run homer in the top of the first. It was his third homer this season. Smith went 2 for 5 with a double. He scored twice and had three RBI.

Catcher Steve Clevenger also homered; his first for Iowa and his fourth overall this season. Clevenger hit it with a man on in the seventh inning. Clevenger also tripled in a 2 for 4 evening.

Left fielder Brad Snyder hit three doubles in a perfect 4 for 4 game. Snyder also walked and scored twice. He had one RBI. Center fielder Lou Montanez went 2 for 5. He scored once and knocked one in.

Bobby Scales hit a pinch-hit triple to lead off the six-run seventh inning. Scales scored. He stayed in the game and was 2 for 2 tonight.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were extinguished by the Chattanooga Lookouts, 2-1.

Starter Chris Rusin was the hard luck loser. He pitched six innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked three and struck out one.

Center fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was promoted to Double-A today and led off for Tennessee. He was 2 for 4 with a double and the Smokies only run.

D.J. LeMahieu saw his hitting streak end at 16.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs downed the Ft. Myers Miracle, 6-4.

Nick Struck pitched the first three innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked one and fanned two.

Dae-Eun Rhee got the win when the D-Cubs rallied in the sixth. He pitched 3.1 innings and gave up one run on five hits. Rhee walked two Miracle batters. He did not have a strikeout.

Frank Batista pitched the ninth inning and collected his tenth save. He allowed a single and a walk after two were out, but struck out the final batter to end the game and escape without allowing a run.

Left fielder Evan Crawford was 2 for 4 with a triple. He singled and scored in the three-run sixth.

Shortstop Junior Lake was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. DH Michael Brenly went 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

First baseman Justin Bour doubled and scored twice in a 2 for 4 game.

Peoria Chiefs

Riding the bus home from Geneva. Will play Quad Cities at home tomorrow.
