Cubs Minor League Wrap: April 20

It was Cubs against the Dodgers tonight as three of the four Cub farm teams took on Dodger farm teams. Let's see if you can guess which team isn't a Dodger farm club. I won't say this time. No peeking! No prizes, but the first to guess it will win glory for himself and his or her descendants.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were swept by the Albuquerque Isotopes, losing 5-4 in tonight's finale.

Frankie De La Cruz got the emergency start as Randy Wells was in Chicago seeing if Ryan Dempster can make his next start. In his first start of the year, he allowed three runs in the first inning. He settled down after that and pitched two more innings with no more damage. De La Cruz went three innings and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out one.

The Cubs were shut down by former Iowa Cub Mike Parisi, who allowed only two runs and three hits over seven innings. Second baseman Alfredo Amezaga was 2 for 3 with a double. He scored twice. Left fielder Edgar Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies clouded the vision of the Chattanooga Lookouts, 3-2.

It was very strong start for left-hander Brooks Raley, who didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning. He did allow two runs on three hits in that fifth inning, but two of the three hits could have been caught. (They weren't easy plays, so they weren't errors.) Raley finished the evening after six innings; allowing two runs on three hits. Raley walked one and struck out three.

Kevin Rhoderick picked up the win after 1.2 innings of scoreless relief of Raley. Rhoderick allowed one hit and walked one. He fanned two. Alberto Cabrera finished the game and got the save after pitching 1.1 innings. He allowed a leadoff walk in the ninth inning who stole second and then third, but Cabrera fanned the final hitter to collect the save. The walk was the only baserunner he allowed and he struck out two.

Logan Watkins doubled to lead off the 7th inning and scored the eventual winning run on a Rebel Ridling single. Watkins was 2 for 5.

Center fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was 2 for 3 with a walk. Catcher Juan Apodaca was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs snapped their five-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over the Tampa Yankees.

Austin Kirk had his second straight start of going seven innings and allowing only one run. Kirk was touched for five hits and he issued one walk. Kirk struck out three while getting his first win of the season.

Daytona broke the game wide open in the second inning when third baseman Greg Rohan hit a grand slam to make it 7-0. It was Rohan's fourth home run of the year. Rohan was 1 for 2 with two walks and five RBI. He scored twice.

Ronald Torreyes had a huge night. He doubled twice and tripled once in a 3 for 3 game. He also walked and was hit by a pitch. Torreyes scored three times.

First baseman Richard Jones went 3 for 5.

Peoria Chiefs

A late ninth-inning rally fell short as the Peoria Chiefs laid an egg against the Great Lakes Loons, 7-5

Starter Willengton Cruz dropped his record to 0-3, as he allowed five runs over 5.2 innings. Cruz surrendered seven hits, including two which disappeared behind the outfield wall. Cruz walked two and struck out four.

The Chiefs scored twice in the bottom of the ninth and had runners on first and second with one out, but Ryan Cuneo and Oliver Zapata both struck out to end the game.

The Chiefs only had five hits tonight, but they walked seven times and Great Lakes made four errors. Center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 1 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Left fielder Eduardo Gonzalez went 1 for 2 and walked twice. He scored once and batted one in.
