Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 11

I was at the Iowa Cubs game tonight, but I'm exhausted now. The game in Fresno did end before the one in Milwaukee.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs topped the Fresno Grizzlies (Giants), 6-5.

Travis Wood threw the textbook quality start for the win. Wood threw six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Blake Parker entered the game with a three-run lead in the ninth and got his fourth save, albeit not without a lot of drama. In the inning he pitched, he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. He walked one and struck out one.

The Iowa Cubs got off to a 6-0 lead, due in part to three solo home runs in the fifth inning. First baseman Anthony Rizzo hit the first one, a rope over the right field fence. It was his eleventh of the season. Rizzo went 2 for 5.

The second home run was hit by third baseman Josh Vitters, who hit a monster blast to left. It was his third home run. Vitters also doubled in a 2 for 4 game. He scored twice.

Right fielder Ty Wright finished off the solo home run parade with his second home run of the season and his first for Iowa. Wright was 2 for 3 with a walk. Wright crossed home twice.

Catcher Juan Apodaca went 3 for 4 with a double in the fifth inning that just missed being the fourth solo home run in that inning. Apodaca had one RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies were extinguished by the Jackson Generals (Mariners), 2-1.

Brooks Raley was the hard-luck loser tonight. Raley gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. Raley struck out seven Generals and walked one.

The Smokies were shut down for seven innings by Generals pitcher Danny Hultzen, who was the second pick in the draft last June. Hultzen only allowed two hits, both of which were hit by DH Nate Samson. Samson was 3 for 4.

The Smokies rally in the ninth inning fell one run short. First baseman Justin Bour had an RBI double in the ninth inning. He was 1 for 4.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second, so the Charlotte Stone Crabs sacrificed a chicken to the rain gods and had the whole game rained out. The game will not be made up.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs ran over the Beloit Snappers (Twins), 6-2.

Starter Michael Jensen got back on track after a couple of poor start and pitched like he had in April. He allowed only one run on five hits over 5.2 innings. Jensen walked one and struck out two as he improved his record to 4-1.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. After a very poor start to the season, Hernandez is now hitting .353 over his last nine games.

Catcher Yaniel Cabezas was 3 for 4 with two RBI.

First baseman Paul Hoilman had an RBI double in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 24 games. Hoilman was 1 for 4 with one run scored.
