Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 16

Light night tonight as the Iowa Cubs were coming home from their California Adventure and the Tennessee Smokies were taking the bus down to Jackson, Mississippi.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs swam past the Brevard County Manatees (Brewers), 6-2 in eight innings.The second game of the scheduled double-header was rained out.

Matt Loosen had a great start, but failed to get the win when he tired in the sixth inning. Loosen allowed only one run on one hit over 5.2 innings. Loosen walked two and struck out six.

Tony Zych relieved Loosen with two out in the sixth inning and allowed an inherited runner to score. He then gave up a run of his own to tie the game at 2-2. Zych bounced back and pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning and got the win when Daytona scored four runs in the rain in the top of the eighth. Zych's final line for the day was 1.1 innings, allowing two runs and three hits. Zych struck out one and did not issue a walk.

Center fielder Matt Szczur tripled to lead off the game and scored on a Nelson Perez single as part of a two-run first. Szczur was 2 for 4.

Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Right fielder Elieser Bonne was 2 for 4 with two RBI: one in the first inning and one in the eighth.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were chopped down by the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners), 5-4.

Starter Michael Jensen got into trouble in the fifth inning when a Wes Darvill error opened up a four-run inning to tie the score. Jensen exited after five innings having allowed four runs, all unearned. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out three.

Sheldon McDonald allowed a run in two innings of relief to take the loss. He surrendered two hits. McDonald walked one and struck out one.

Left fielder Ryan Cuneo was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. However, he was thrown out on the basepaths three times: twice at the plate and once at third.

Shortstop Wes Darvill was 2 for 4 and scored twice, although he did also make that big error. DH Taylor Davis went 2 for 4 with one run batted in.
