Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants Preview, Friday 6/1, 9:15 CT

Here we are in June already! Let's review how the Cubs' season has gone in the first two months.

The Cubs were 8-15 in April and got outscored by 21 runs (103-82). That's pretty bad, a winning percentage of .348.

It must have been worse in May, right, with the 12-game losing streak? Nope, just about the same: seven games under .500 at 10-17, outscored by a nearly identical margin (25 runs, 128-103). Only the Padres (-61) and the Twins (-74) have a worse run differential than the Cubs at -46. The Cubs are 6-17 in road games; only the Padres (6-19) are worse

They rank 14th in runs scored, 14th in walks drawn by hitters, fifth in most runs allowed, second in most walks allowed, and have a team OPS+ of 89 (league average: 94). Cubs pitchers are hitting .105 (10-for-95) with 43 strikeouts, and the team is second-to-last in the NL in sacrifice bunts with 17, despite the spring-training bunting tournament

And now, four games with the Giants, on the road, to start a 10-game road trip.

Cubs lineup:

Campana CF, Castro SS, Mather 3B, Soriano LF, Johnson RF, Baker 1B, Barney 2B, Clevenger C, Maholm P

Giants lineup:

Blanco rf, Theriot 2b, Cabrera lf, Posey c, Pagan cf, Pill 1b, Arias 3b, Crawford ss, Bumgarner p

Paul Maholm last faced the Giants more than two years ago, April 13, 2010, and a lot of those guys aren't on the Giants any more. The Giant who has faced Maholm the most is Ryan Theriot (12-for-35, .343). Theriot is hitting .203/.250/.243 this year, so maybe that's not really anything to worry about. And Theriot is batting second tonight. Guess no one ever learns.

Madison Bumgarner is off to a solid start this season. Last year, he faced the Cubs on May 13 at Wrigley Field and threw six solid innings before the Cubs teed off on San Francisco's bullpen. Current Cubs are 14-for-52 against him with no home runs.
