Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 10

As we all wait for the Great Pumpkin to decide which baseball team is the most sincere, there were some games played today.

The opening day roster of the Boise Hawks is starting to leak out. As of right now, it looks like the Hawks are going to be loaded with prospects. They're going to be the team to see the rest of the year.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs silenced the Nashville Sounds, 14-3.

Chris Rusin made the start and improved his record to 5-4 with a solid outing. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Rusin didn't walk anyone and struck out two.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo continued to treat the Pacific Coast League like Sherman treated Georgia. Today he hit two more home runs, giving him a league-leading twenty bombs. The first home run was a solo home run in the fourth inning and the second was with a man on in the seventh. Rizzo went 3 for 5 with four total RBI.

Rizzo's home run in the fourth inning was one of three the I-Cubs hit in the inning. Rizzo's home run was actually back-to-back with center fielder Brett Jackson's eighth home run. There was a man on for Jackson's home run. Jackson was 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored three times and batted three in. Jackson also stole a base.

The third home run of the inning came from catcher Juan Apodaca with a man on. It was his first home run this season. Apodaca went 2 for 4 with a walk. He batted four runners in total.

Right fielder Ty Wright was 3 for 5 with two doubles. Wright scored three times.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies chopped the Mississippi Braves, 4-2 for their seventh straight win.

Eric Jokisch won his third straight Double-A decision, allowing but one run over 7.1 innings. Jokisch was touched for only three singles and he only walked one. Jokisch struck out three.

The Smokies scored their four runs on only five hits. Third baseman Nate Samson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Daytona Cubs fell to the Tampa Yankees, 5-4.

Starter Austin Kirk allowed three runs over six innings, although only one of the three runs was earned. He gave up five hits and didn't walk anyone, although he did hit one batter. Kirk struck out two.

Second baseman Ronald Torreyes went 3 for 4 with a stolen base. He scored once.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs skinned the Kane County Cougars (Royals), 4-1 for their sixth straight win.

Starling Peralta opened the game on the mound and allowed one run over the first three innings. Peralta was tagged for four hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Austin Reed threw the next three innings without allowing a run and took his third win. Reed gave up two hits. He walked one and struck out one.

After Felix Pena pitched two scoreless innings, Yao-Lin Wang came on in the ninth and got his eight save. It was a perfect inning and he struck out one.

Most of the Chiefs' offense came from one swing of the bat: a three-run home run by first baseman Paul Hoilman in the fifth inning. Hoilman was 1 for 4. He now has four homers this year.

Center fielder Taiwan Easterling was a perfect 2 for 2 with two walks. Easterling also stole a base and scored once. So far, Easterling has been glad to see the calendar change to June. For the month he's been hitting .357 with a .455 OBP.

Just because I know someone is going to ask about the Money Badger, shortstop Javier Baez was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored once. He apparently also hit two monster shots that both went foul.

Right fielder Oliver Zapata was 3 for 4 and scored once. He also stole a base.
