The good news out of Tennessee is that while Jae-Hoon Ha does have a concussion and was placed on the Disabled List, he did not break his jaw or anything else. He's reportedly doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. Concussions are always tricky, of course, but it sounds like he's going to be just fine in time.
The good news that came out of this was that Matt Szczur was promoted from High-A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee to take Ha's place. He started in center field and batted lead-off. He did go 0 for 4 though.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs snapped their eight game losing streak by shutting out the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 5-0.
Chris Volstad shut down the RedHawks for eight innings, allowing only four hits. He walked three and struck out five as he got his third win for the Iowa Cubs
Shortstop Alfredo Amezaga was 3 for 5 and scored a run. Second baseman Adrian Cardenas was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He also scored once. Catcher Brian Esposito was 2 for 4.
Right fielder Dave Sappelt was 1 for 3 with a two-run triple in the fourth inning. He also scored a run and stole a base. Third baseman Josh Vitters went 1 for 4 with a walk and a run scored.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were blinded by the Jacksonville Suns (Marlins), 6-4.
Starting pitcher Ty'Relle Harris didn't make it out of the third inning. He went 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out two. His record dropped to 2-4 overall and 0 and 2 for the Smokies
Left fielder Greg Rohan hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his fourth for Tennessee and sixteenth overall. Rohan went 2 for 4. Shortstop Junior Lake had two doubles in a 2 for 4 game. He scored one run and knocked two home.
Catcher Juan Apodaca was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs keelhauled the Bradenton Marauders (Pirates), 2-0.
Robert Whitenack got his first win since last year's Tommy John Surgery, going five innings and allowing but two hits. He walked three and struck out four.
Eduardo Figueroa pitched three shutout innings in relief of Whitenack, allowing only one hit and one walk. He struck out four. Then A.J. Morris pitched the ninth to close out the game and get his second save. He did allow a one-out single, but then he induced a double play to end the game. He did not have a strike out.
First baseman Rebel Ridling cracked a solo home run in the four inning. Ridling was 2 for 4 and stole a base. He now has ten home runs this season; two with Daytona.
Shortstop Timothy Saunders was 2 for 3 with a double. He scored the other Daytona run on a Ronald Torreyes ground out. Saunders stole two bases.
Peoria Chiefs
The Peoria Chiefs swept the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Angels), 3-2.
Zach Cates had his longest start of the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Cates was impressive as he struck out seven and walked only one.
Austin Reed got the win in relief when the Chiefs came back in the bottom of the eighth. Reed pitched 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He neither walked nor struck anyone out.
It's not going to surprise anyone, but the winning blow was a massive two-run home run by shortstop Javier Baez in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his eleventh home run of the season. Baez was 2 for 3. Oh, and he walked for the first time since June 28th.
Second baseman Wes Darvill went 2 for 4. He doubled and scored on the Baez home run. Darvill also had one RBI.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks cleaned up the Tri-City Dust Devils (Rockies), 8-3.
James Pugliese pitched the first four innings. He allowed three runs on six hits. Pugliese walked one and struck out two.
Willengton Cruz got the win in relief because Pugliese didn't go five. Cruz pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. He walked one and struck out four. He did hit a batter.
Right fielder Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning that put Boise ahead for good. It was his second home run of the season. Contreras was 1 for 4.
First baseman Dan Vogelbach was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He had one RBI.
Second baseman Gioskar Amaya went 2 for 5 with a two-run triple in the sixth inning. Amaya scored once.
Center fielder Trey Martin was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored two times and also stole a base. Left fielder Xavier Batista was 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a stolen base. He scored twice.
AZL Cubs
Lendy Castillo allowed one run in four innings. Jorge Soler was 2 for 4.
