Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 7

Quick note, in Rookie Ball in Arizona tonight, the Brewers scored 17 runs in the top of the first against the Royals. The Royals struck back with 6 in the bottom of the first. The game settled down a bit and ended 23-8. That's only 6-2 since the first inning.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs quieted the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 5-4.

Esmailin Caridad was the emergency starter tonight when Chris Rusin warmed up in the bullpen but never took the mound. No reason was given at the time. Caridad allowed an unearned run over three innings. Cardidad allowed two hits and three walks. He struck out one.

Jeff Beliveau blew a 3-2 lead in the top of the 8th, but stayed in the game and got the win when the I-Cubs scored twice in the bottom of the inning. He allowed one more run in the ninth, but hung on to get the win. He allowed two runs on four hits over two innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Shortstop Alfredo Amezaga had two doubles in a 3 for 5 game. He scored twice and had one RBI. Center fielder Dave Sappelt was 2 for 4, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Sappelt had two RBI.

Right fielder James Adduci was promoted from Tennessee and he was 2 for 4. He scored twice and batted one in.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies couldn't hide from the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 6-3.

Starter Dae-Eun Rhee went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Casey Harman entered a tie game in the top of the ninth and gave up three runs and took the loss. He pitched one full inning and allowed the three runs on four hits, two of which were doubles. He did not walk anyone and struck out one.

Catcher Juan Apodaca was 3 for 4 with a double. He scored twice. Center fielder Logan Watkins was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He had two RBI.

Third baseman Junior Lake was 2 for 5. Right fielder Michael Burgess went 2 for 4.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were shot down by the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 6-5.

P.J. Francescon threw the first five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. One of the five runs was unearned. Francescon did not walk anyone, although he didn't strike out anyone either. Francescon's record in Daytona fell to 1-3 with the loss.

DH Taylor Davis hit his first Daytona home run and second overall in the top of the ninth. The home run also scored John Andreoli and got the Cubs to within a run. Davis went 1 for 4.

Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara hit a solo home run in the third inning, his seventh of the season. Alcantara was 1 for 3 with two walks.

Center fielder Rubi Silva was 2 for 4 and scored a run.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs boiled and buttered the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Angels), 5-3.

Starting pitcher Jose Rosario allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. Rosario walked three, hit two batters and struck out five.

Hunter Cervenka relieved Rosario and got the win. He faced six batters and retired them all. Cervenka struck out three.

Yao-Lin Wang allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but hung on to get his eleventh save of the season anyway. Wang pitched 1.1 innings and allowed the run on three hits He walked one and struck out two.

Third baseman Dustin Geiger hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, extending his home run streak to four games, which ties a Peoria record. He's hit five homers in that span and eight this season. Geiger was 1 for 5.

DH Javier Baez hadn't sent a ball into orbit in a while, but he achieved escape velocity with a bases-empty blast in the sixth inning. it was Baez's fifth home run this year. He was 3 for 4 and scored twice tonight.

The biggest blow, though, came last as left fielder Yasiel Balaguert hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth that ended a 2-2 tie. It was his first home run this season. Balaguert was 1 for 4.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks shut out the Yakima Bears (Diamondbacks), 4-0, ending a seven-game losing streak on the road.

Tayler Scott picked up his first professional win by throwing six scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and walked only one. Scott struck out four.

Hayden Simpson pitched the final three innings for his second save and his first save for Boise. Simpson surrendered three hits and walked two. He struck out three.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario cranked out three more hits tonight in a 3 for 5 evening. One of the hits was a double. Candelario had one RBI and he scored once too.

DH Willson Contreras was 2 for 5 with a two-RBI double in the seventh. He scored. once.

Second baseman Gioskar Amaya and shortstop Stephen Bruno both went 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.

AZL Cubs

Beat the Giants, 11-1.

Timothy Saunders hit his second home run and went 3 for 4. Rafael Lopez was 3 for 5 with a double and a triple in a rehab assignment.
