We're getting to the end of the season as Iowa's and the Arizona Rookie Ball's seasons are over. Everyone else will be done on Monday except for Boise, who will still be in the Northwest League Playoffs.
Congratulations to the following players who were named to their respective league's post-season all-star teams: Justin Bour. John Andreoli, Matt Loosen, Gioskar Amaya, Dan Vogelbach (for Arizona) and Carlos Martinez-Pumarino.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies smoked the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Reds) on a cedar plank, 5-0.
Chris Rusin had to make a tune-up start tonight in Pensacola because the I-Cubs have been rained out for the rest of the season. Rusin, who hasn't pitched for the Smokies since early last season, pitched three perfect innings, striking out one.
Nick Struck almost went the rest of the way, going 5. 2 innings and only allowing one hit: a lead-off triple in the fifth inning that he kept from scoring. Struck struck out six and walked two.
The win was Struck's fourteenth of the season, which will lead the league at the end of the season.
The big blow for the Smokies was a three-run home run in the sixth by left fielder Rubi Silva. It was Silva's fifth home run and second with Tennessee. Silva was 2 for 4 with four total runs batted in. He also stole a base.
Center fielder Matt Szczur led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a Jae-Hoon Ha sacrifice fly. Szczur was 2 for 5.
Daytona Cubs
Rebel Ridling had four hits, including a walk-off double, as the Daytona Cubs speared the Brevard County Manatees (Brewers), 4-3.
Kyler Burke pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Matt Iannazzo and Scott Weismann shut down the Manatees the rest of the way. Iannazzo threw three shutout innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out two. Weismann got the win with two innings pitched, giving up only one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two.
First baseman Ridling also hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his fifth for Daytona and thirteenth overall. Ridling had eight total bases in his 4 for 5 night: a home run, a double and two singles. He just scored the one run and had the two RBI.
Right fielder Vladimir Frias was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Left fielder Nelson Perez was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs final home game was rained out. It will not be made up.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks lost to the Everett AquaSox (Mariners), 6-4.
Starter Jose Arias kept the Frogs in check with five shutout innings. He allowed four hits. Arias walked one and struck out three.
Hayden Simpson got the loss after he gave up six runs over 2+ innings. He actually allowed two runs in the first two innings, but then all four runners he faced in the eighth inning reached base and eventually came around to score. Simpson allowed six hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Second baseman Gioskar Amaya went 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored two runs.
Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. He had two RBI.
Shortstop Stephen Bruno extended his hitting streak to 21 games by going 2 for 4 with a double. DH Rock Shoulders was also 2 for 4 with a double. Shoulder had one run batted in.
