Via Carrie Muskat's blog, we learn the names of six more players cut from the spring roster:
The Cubs trimmed six from the spring camp roster on Monday. Trey McNutt, Brooks Raley, Alberto Cabrera and Logan Watkins were optioned to Triple-A Iowa, Robert Whitenack was optioned to Double-A Tennessee, and pitcher Nick Struck was assigned to Minor League camp. Raley and Cabrera are projected as starters in Iowa’s rotation.
None of this should surprise you at all; Nick Struck will likely also head to Iowa, possibly to be in the rotation. Some of these players, particularly Raley and Cabrera (who have major-league experience) and Watkins (the org's minor-league player of the year in 2012) could see big-league action at some point this season.
These moves leave 53 players in camp. I'd expect another round of cuts sometime Tuesday -- the Cubs' first off day of the spring. The spring roster now consists of 25 pitchers (nine non-roster invitees), five catchers (two non-roster invitees), 13 infielders (five non-roster invitees) and 10 outfielders (three non-roster invitees).
The Cubs face the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Monday afternoon.
