Cubs Prospect Albert Almora Breaks Hamate Bone

This... is not good news.

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- I don't have any more details, really, than the headline on this post, but it comes directly from the source:

Almora doesn't say how this injury happened, although there were two intrasquad games of Cubs minor leaguers going on at Fitch Park Thursday afternoon, so I suppose we can infer that it happened during one of those games.

The hamate bone, as you may know, is in the wrist, according to Wikipedia:

It is situated at the medial and lower angle of the carpus, with its base downward, resting on the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones, and its apex directed upward and lateralward

In recent years major leaguers such as Pablo Sandoval, Nick Markakis, Domonic Brown, Troy Tulowitzki and Dustin Pedroia have had this injury. Many of those players missed significant time with the hamate injury. That's the bad news. The good news is that most of them came back and resumed hitting well. Almora won't turn 19 until next month, so there's plenty of time for him to heal this injury and come back.

I'm sure we'll hear more details over the next few days, but I wanted to get this information out to you now.
