I've got nothing to go up here. I've got lots to go down in the bullets.
- In case you haven't heard, Derek Jeter has a new fracture in his ankle and will be out at least until the all-star break.
- Reaction to the Captain being out longer than expected is coming from all around baseball. Ken Rosenthal thinks that the future of the Yankees is in doubt, although not so much for Eduardo Nunez, who now knows he's going to be the Yanks starting shortstop for a while.
- In a typical piece of Yankees hagiography, Wallace Matthews thinks this string of injuries is more fitting to a mere mortal than . . .well, whatever Derek Jeter is that doesn't make him human, I guess.
- Cliff Corcoran thinks this injury is likely the result of Jeter trying to get back in the lineup too soon, and that's a sign of selfishness, not sacrifice.
- Final bit on Jeter: This copy of a Colorado Rockies scouting report on him as a high school player is cool.
- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan blasts the Orioles for not having the "common courtesy" to play an extra road game so that the Ravens can start the season at home. Because "Who really cares?" according to Ryan. I guess the Orioles shouldn't care if they only play 80 home games this year. I guess they also shouldn't care about flying from New York after a night game, to Chicago for a day game and then back to Baltimore for a night game in three days. How about the "common courtesy" of just having the Ravens play on Wednesday? God, I hate the NFL.
- Ross Douthat asks if this is baseball's golden age? Rob Neyer responds. (Douthat is normally a political writer, but this column is non-political.)
- More from Corcoran, who asks if it's proper that Yovani Gallardo is pitching just two days after a DUI arrest. (Although "arrest" might be a bit strong, as a first offense for a DUI in Wisconsin is just a $300 ticket, although extenuating circumstances can drive the fine higher.)
- Staying with the Brewers, this photograph by Morry Gash of the AP is in line for one of the best of the year. Also, Ryan Braun needs to work on his accuracy.
- Ken Rosenthal thinks Walt Weiss's managerial style reminds him of Tony LaRussa, and La Russa agrees.
- Speaking of LaRussa, he will not be the next manager of the Angels, says him.
- Despite high expectations, the Blue Jays are off to a slow start.
- Despite high expectations, the Dodgers are off to a slow start.
- Denard Span is fitting in perfectly as the Nationals leadoff man. Let's get Denarded.
- David Schoenfield thinks that while the Diamondbacks have traded for a lot of "grit," they've got a lot of talent, too.
- Mets prospect Travis D'Arnaud broke his foot.
- Mike Piazza is getting ready for his ballet debut. I know he's just doing this as a favor to his daughter, but I applaud Piazza for supporting the arts like this.
- Padres CEO Tom Garfinkel has apologized for comparing Zack Greinke to "Rain Man."
- Terry Francona is doing his best David Soul impersonation and won't give up on Ubaldo Jimenez, baby. Now is Francona Starsky or Hutch?
- Braves GM Frank Wren says the Braves have "gotten Atlanta's attention." Sure. They've got to do something between SEC spring football and the start of fall practices.
- A more in-depth article about the sequel to the film about Twins phenom prospect Miguel Sano.
- The Astros were 0 for 2 in their infield experiments this season.
- The Wednesday rainout at Wrigley may have been good news for the Rangers.
- Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times thinks Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma is the best ace you've never heard of.
Iowa Hawkeye football coach Kirk Ferentz is not a Luddite, according to his son Brian. Good to know the Hawkeye football team won't take time out from practice to smash industrial looms.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
