Only one game in the Cubs minor leagues today and even that one was almost rained out. The Iowa Cubs, Daytona Cubs and the Kane County Cougars all had travel days and didn't play.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were served for brunch by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 5-4.
Starting pitcher Matt Loosen allowed two runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. Loosen walked four and struck out three
The Smokies scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but Marcus Hatley gave up a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to Biscuits catcher Mayo Acosta to tie up the game. Hatley pitched 1.1 innings and the home run was the only hit he allowed. He walked one and struck out two.
After a 1:08 rain delay, Tony Zych took the mound and was good over his first two innings of work, but got in trouble when he came out for a third innings and allowed two runs in the top of the ninth to take the loss. Zych pitched 2.2 innings and gave up the two runs on two hits and two walks (one intentional). He did not have a strikeout.
The big blow in that three run fifth was a two-run double by first baseman Ty Wright. Wright was 2 for 5.
The Smokies got a run back in the ninth when right fielder Matt Szczur singled, stole second and scored an an RBI single by shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. But the Smokies couldn't get another run and the game ended on a Jae-Hoon Ha strikeout.
Szczur was 1 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored. Alcantara was 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and that one RBI. He also stole his twelfth base without getting caught.
