I'm glad that the Cubs game wasn't televised on Extra Innings tonight anyway with the Project Runway final on. I think it was a tough and interesting choice between Michelle and Patricia and I think they made the right one.
- I missed it, but apparently White Sox broadcaster Ken Harrelson got into it with the MLB Network's Brian Kenney on Kenny's show. This was a response to Kenny's response Harrelson's earlier anti-sabermetric rant. You can watch the whole interview here, and Harrelson invented a new stat called "The Will To Win" or TWTW. I'm not sure what Harrelson means by that, but it was odd that he'd cite Harold Reynolds as a great example of it, since Reynolds played 12 years in the majors and played for ten losing teams. The two winning teams he played for won 83 and 85 games respectively.
- The oldest living major leaguer, Conrado "Connie" Marrero, turned 102 yesterday. He finally got the $20,000 given to everyone who played in the majors between 1947 and 1979 after the money had been held up for years because of the U.S. embargo on Cuba. Be sure to check out the shirt he's wearing. It's one letter away from being perfect.
- Former pitcher Rick Camp has died. Camp played nine years in the majors, but he will forever be remembered for one game on July 4-5 of 1985. I stayed up until 3:15 in the morning (Central time) watching that game on WTBS. I was just flipping around the channels a little past midnight before going to bed and I was shocked to see a game that I had turned off hours ago was still going on. Of course, Camp ended up losing that game when he failed to hit a second home run in the bottom of the 19th. Famously, although WTBS didn't televise it, they shot off the promised fireworks show at 4:30 a.m.
- Bud Selig will not shut down the baseball season to allow major leaguers to participate in the Olympics, which pretty much kills any chance of baseball and softball being re-instated as an Olympic Sport. But of course Synchronized Diving goes on.
- Orioles top prospect, pitcher Dylan Bundy, is seeking a second opinion. Remember, no one ever gets a second opinion if they got a good diagnosis in the first place.
- Derek Jeter does his best General MacArthur impersonation to announce that he shall return.
- The Mariners are replacing Brendan Ryan as their starting shortstop with Robert Andino. Let's see, Ryan is a terrible hitter, but he's the best defensive shortstop in the majors right now. They're replacing him with Andino, who's a mediocre fielder and is also a terrible hitter. Makes sense.
- Jose Valverde, like Sedaka, is back.
- Jamie McCourt wants a judge to set aside her divorce settlement with Frank McCourt now that he's made all that money from selling the Dodgers. Just go away. Both of you. Never darken America again.
- Jon Paul Morosi thinks it's time to tear down the Phillies and start over. You're over a year behind the Cubs, guys.
- Ted Freaking Lilly.
- The Marlins are doing pretty much everything to try to get fans into the ballpark.
- Yu Darvish and A.J. Pierzynski are getting along great in Texas. I've got news for you, Yu. When one pitches the way you are pitching right now, people will find a way to get along with you.
- Billy Butler just loves to hit against Justin Verlander.
- Santiago Casilla fielded this double to left field well. Unfortunately, he was just warming up in the bullpen at the time.
- The Astros are looking to leave their spring training home in Kissimmee for somewhere in South Florida. The Blue Jays are likely to join them.
- The plaque at AT&T Park commemorating Barry Bonds' 756th home run will be replaced after it was stolen some time last week.
- Contrary to the beliefs of some, the Twins do indeed have a stats/sabermetric guy. And Terry Ryan listens to him.
- Aramis Ramirez will probably return to the Brewers some time next week.
- Oh, the Flushing Mets fans sing this song, DUDA, DUDA. The cleanup hitter for the Mets, all the live long day.
- Finally, the changes at Petco Field has made it slightly more favorable to hitters, but the biggest issue is the marine layer that rolls in at night that will never make Petco a good place to hit during night games.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
