Everyone is in a better mood when the Cubs have a three-game winning streak, even if it is against the Marlins. So no one is going to care about what happened in Des Moines.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were thunderstruck by the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 13-2.
Really? You want a recap? The Storm Chasers didn't score in the sixth inning, thanks to Casey Coleman, although Coleman did allow a solo home run in the second inning he pitched. Omaha didn't score in the ninth because they didn't come to bat. They scored in every other inning tonight.
Starter Drew Carpenter put this game out of reach early as he got hammered for six runs in the bottom of the first. He stayed in the game two more innings and allowed a run in both of them. His final line on the night was eight runs, seven of which were earned, on nine hits over three innings. Carpenter walked two and struck out two.
Second baseman Logan Watkins was 2 for 4 with an RBI triple in the third inning. He then scored on a double by DH Brett Jackson, who was 1 for 4.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were rained out, which leaves Daytona as the only Cubs farm team yet to experience a weather-related postponement. Don't worry Daytona, August is coming.
The Smokies will try to play a double-header tomorrow, but there's a 70% chance of rain in the forecast for Sunday.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs got mauled by the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 5-1.
Starter Austin Kirk was cursed by the gopher ball tonight as three of the four runs he allowed came via two home runs. Kirk took his first loss of the season after going five innings and giving up those four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Center fielder Anthony Giansanti was 2 for 4 with the lone Daytona RBI. First baseman Ben Carhart was 2 for 4 with a double.
Shortstop Javier Baez was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Kane County Cougars
The Cougars scored three runs in the eighth inning to melt down the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 5-3, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Starter Tayler Scott went six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Brian Smith pitched the rest of the way to claim his first win of the year. Smith gave up one run on three hits over the three innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three.
Shortstop Wes Darvill was 2 for 4. Center fielder Oliver Zapata went 1 for 3 with a triple in the seventh inning. However, he did get doubled up off of third base on a line drive caught by the second baseman.
