Josh Vitters came off the DL for Iowa today, although he didn't play in today's game. They also assigned Guillermo Moscoso to Iowa from extended spring training and Barret Loux and Darnell McDonald hit the DL.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs stopped the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 7-2.
The Cubs debut of Guillermo Moscoso couldn't have gone much better. He collected his first win after he gave up only one run on three hits over five innings. The only run scored on a solo home run by Chris McGuiness to start off the fifth inning. Moscoso struck out six and only walked one.
Left fielder Brent Lillibridge broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with a one-out solo home run, his second of the season. The next batter, center fielder Brian Bogusevic, doubled to extend his hitting streak to fifteen games and then first baseman Brad Nelson clubbed his sixth home run of the year to make it 3-0.
Lillibridge was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Bogusevic had two doubles and a triple in a big 3 for 4 day. He had one RBI and he scored twice. Nelson was 2 for 2 with two walks. He scored twice.
Tennessee Smokies
It's 514 miles from Kodak, TN to Jackson, MS. That's 7 and a half hours by bus, and that doesn't even count all the stops they'll make. The Southern League is not for wimps.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs made the Palm Beach Cardinals blue, 11-4.
Zach Cates only pitched the first six innings, but he didn't allow a hit tonight. (He didn't allow a run, either.) Cates walked three and struck out seven.
The no-hitter got broken up to lead off the seventh when the first two batters singled off of David Cales. I guess one letter made all the difference. Cales did get out of the inning without allowing a run, however. He walked one and struck out one.
Third baseman Ben Carhart was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. He scored once. Center fielder Zeke DeVoss was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored three times and had one RBI.
Kane County Cougars
The Cougars scored three times in each of the final three innings as they sank the Lake County Captains (Indians), 13-9.
Starting pitcher Lendy Castillo put the Cougars in a hole as he gave up seven runs on ten hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one.
Justin Amlung pitched the next three innings and collected the win after giving up only one run over three innings. He also only allowed one hit, which was a solo home run in the seventh inning to Eric Haase. Amlung walked one and struck out two.
Nathan Dorris then finished the game and got his first save. He allowed an unearned run on two hits over two innings. He struck out four and didn't walk anyone.
First baseman Dan Vogelbach hit a home run in his third straight game, a solo home run to lead off the eighth and tie the score at eight each. Vogelbach was 4 for 6 tonight and had two total RBI. He now has five total home runs this year.
Catcher Willson Contreras gave Kane County its first run with a solo home run in the second inning, which was his third of the year. Contreras went 2 for 4 with a walk and he scored three times.
Left fielder Rock Shoulders finished out the month with two doubles in a 2 for 5 night. Shoulders also walked once. Shoulders scored three times and had one RBI.
Right fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 4 for 6 with a double and three runs batted in. He scored once. Catcher Yaniel Cabezas went 3 for 6. Shortstop Wes Darvill was 2 for 5 with a walk and a stolen base. Darvill scored three runs.
