Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were crushed by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Rockies), 11-1.

Starter Brooks Raley got knocked around for eight runs on eleven hits over only four innings. Raley walked three and struck out four.

Iowa got their only run in the seventh inning when right fielder Darnell McDonald led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-out double by second baseman Logan Watkins. Both players were 1 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

A rally in the ninth inning fell short as the Birmingham Barons (White Sox) sent the Tennessee Smokies to their seventh straight defeat, 5-4. The win was Birmingham's 11th straight.

Starter Eric Jokisch took the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings and he gave up five runs on eight hits. He allowed most of the runs on two home runs, a solo home run in the second and a three-run blast in the fifth, after which Jokisch exited the game.

After Jokisch exited, Brian Schlitter tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and Frank Batista threw two to let the Smokies back into the game.

The Smokies trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth when the loaded the bases with two outs. RBI walks to Elliot Soto and Matt Szczur cut the deficit to 5-4 and put the tying run at third and the winning run at second, but then Ronald Torreyes grounded out to end the game.

Szczur was 2 for 3 with two walks and a stolen base. He also scored one run. Christian Villanueva was 2 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

Right fielder Rubi Silva hit his sixth home run of the year with the bases empty in the fourth inning. Silva went 1 for 4 with a stolen base. He scored twice.

Daytona Cubs

Got two and a half innings in against Dunedin before the rain suspended play. Starter Yeiper Castillo retired all nine batters he faced before the rains came.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars swept a double-header at Burlington, 2-1 in ten innings and 4-1.

In the first game, starter Tayler Scott went 5.1 innings and allowed only one run on four hits. The big news here is that the run scored on solo home run in the sixth inning by Anthony Bemboom. The reason that's big news is that the home run was the first that Scott had allowed as a professional. He had gone 105 innings before allowing a home run.

Scott struck out six and walked three.

Steve Perakslis relieved Scott with one out in the sixth and runners on first and third, and managed to strand both baserunners. Nathan Dorris then got the win after tossing two perfect innings. He struck out two. Ian Dickson then pitched the bottom of the tenth for his first career save. Dickson allowed one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one.

The winning run scored when right fielder Bijan Rademacher scored on a two-out single by center fielder Oliver Zapata. Rademacher was 2 for 4 and scored both Cougars runs. Zapata was 1 for 4.

Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 4 with the other RBI single in this game.

In game two, Felix Pena started and allowed a run on only two hits over six innings. However, he did walk five and he hit a batter.Pena struck out six.

Eddie Orozco pitched the seventh inning and loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but he got the final out without allowing a run and collected his second save. He struck out one.

First baseman Rock Shoulders hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his seventh of the season. Shoulders was 1 for 3. Two batters later, right fielder Rademacher added an insurance run when he hit his first homer of the season. He was also 1 for 3.
