Cubs vs. Mets Preview, Saturday 5/18, 12:05 CT: So Close, And Yet...

The Cubs will try to even up their weekend series with the Mets in an early Saturday start.

USA TODAY Sports

First, I wanted you all to know that SBN's repair work was completed overnight -- functionality should be back to normal. If you still find things are not working properly, let me know or post a comment in this Blog Huddle post.

Also, if you think the Cubs have been making some bonehead plays lately, they got nothin' compared to the Astros, who now sport a winning percentage of .269 -- on pace for a 42-win season. So are the Marlins. There has never been a season in major-league history when more than one team has failed to win 50 games, and there hasn't been a season with two 110+ loss teams since 1969. We could have both this year.

For the Cubs, despite Friday's loss, they are 12-11 since the low point of the season (5-13). Their Pythagorean record is 20-21, and they have lost 12 games in which they have held a lead (mostly due to bad bullpen work). Just a break here and there, and I still think this team has a streak within waiting to come out.

Cubs lineup:

DeJesus CF, Castro SS, Rizzo 1B, Soriano LF, Schierholtz RF, Valbuena 3B, Castillo C, Barney 2B, Feldman P

The Mets lineup was not available at the time I wrote this post. Please check the BCB Twitter feed for the Mets lineup.

Scott Feldman has made one career start against the Mets and you really don't want to know (don't say I didn't warn you). It was almost five years ago. The only current Met who has more than two career AB against Feldman is John Buck (3-for-13). Feldman has a 1.57 ERA and 0.837 WHIP in his last three starts covering 28⅔ innings. That, we hope, continues.

Jeremy Hefner threw 1⅓ innings of scoreless relief against the Cubs May 26, 2012 at Wrigley Field, his only career appearance against the Cubs. He's been pretty good over his last four starts (3.33 ERA, one HR allowed in 27 innings, at least six innings in all four of them). He seems pretty generic; that could mean just about anything for the Cubs' performance today. Beyond that, I got nothin' on Hefner.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Mets site Amazin' Avenue.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
