Fujikawa On DL; Cubs Claim Alex Burnett As Replacement

The Cubs play a bit of roster Jenga after Kyuji Fujikawa has a recurrence of the forearm injury that placed him on the DL last month.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

When Kyuji Fujikawa left Sunday's game shaking his right forearm, we feared the worst -- another trip to the disabled list, and now that's come to pass:

Burnett? Who's Burnett, you ask?

Alex Burnett was a 12th-round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft; he had three mediocre-to-decent seasons for Minnesota before he was claimed by the Blue Jays, and then the Orioles, within a two-week span this spring. He spent most of 2013 at Triple-A Norfolk, where he threw well, but was recalled by Baltimore earlier this month. He has made just two appearances for the Orioles, one good, one not so good.

Roster Jenga continues, apparently; based on this tweet earlier today:

... many assumed that recent pickup Eduardo Sanchez (on waivers from the Cardinals) would replace Fujikawa in the pen. But, at least for now, it will be Alex Burnett. Don't be surprised if Sanchez is next, though. The claim of Burnett leaves the Cubs' 40-man roster full.
