Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 3

The Cougars swept a double-header, the Smokies lose in extras and the weather is still undefeated this season.

Iowa Cubs

Come on it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

They'll try to play a double-header on Sunday.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were dissipated by the Mississippi Braves, 3-2 in 11 innings.

Alberto Cabrera started and tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

A.J. Morris gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in only a third of an inning in the seventh to tie up the game at two.

Frank Batista loaded the bases with one out in the eleventh and then gave up a single to Kyle Russell to end the game. Batista gave up one run on two hits and a walk over 1.1 innings. Batista struck out one.

Second baseman Ronald Torreyes was 2 for 5. He scored one of Tennessee's runs and knocked the other one home.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs finally got hit with the postponement bug, although theirs was at Lakeland for "unplayable conditions." No, they were not snowed out.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars swept the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays), 4-2 in 11 innings and 3-1.

The first game ended in the bottom of the 11th inning (of a scheduled seven inning game) when Rock Shoulders hit a two-run walk-off home run. It was his sixth of the season and it made a winner out of reliever Matt Ianazzo. Ianazzo allowed only one hit, a one-out single in the tenth inning, over three shutout innings. Ianazzo walked two batters and struck out four.

Tayler Scott had started the game and he gave up two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings. Scott walked two and struck out one.

Shoulders was 2 for 6 in this game. Second baseman Gioskar Amaya went 2 for 5 with a double and a walk.

Catcher Chadd Krist went 1 for 2 with three walks. He scored after one of those walks in the fifth inning.

In the second game, starting pitcher Ian Dickson gave up only one unearned run over 4.2 innings. Dickson allowed two hits while walking two and striking out four

Brian Smith pitched the rest of the game and got the win after 2.1 scoreless innings. He surrendered 2 hits but didn't walk anyone while striking out five.

Right fielder Bijan Rademacher was 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario went 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. He scored two times.

Shoulders was 1 for 2 with an RBI double in the second game. He was also walked intentionally once.
