Al mentioned in his write-up of yesterday's game that the Cubs pitchers set an NL record for RBI in a calendar month with 19 in the month of May. Just checking the stats on that, and only David Ortiz has more RBI as a DH in the month of May with 20. With one more day to go, the Cubs pitchers might just catch him, if the game gets in.
- The Mets completed a four-game sweep of the Yankees, the first time ever that the Mets have swept the season series with the Yankees. Of course it helps that they only play four games with each other rather than six. But the mood in the Mets clubhouse has gone from glum to glad this week.
- On the other hand, Yankees GM Brian Cashman doesn't even want to imagine what George Steinbrenner would be telling him if he were still alive.
- Ken Rosenthal thinks the substitute Yanks have done a good job and all, but it's time for the "real" Yankees to return if they want to stay competitive this season.
- Rob Neyer, on the other hand, thinks the Yankees are in trouble no matter who plays for them.
- The Royals, looking for a spark, named George Brett their interim hitting coach. He's interim because he doesn't know that he wants to do it, but he wants to help the Royals in their time of need right now.
- Ken Rosenthal says the Brett hiring may have just bought Ned Yost some time to save his job.
- David Schoenfield of ESPN. com thinks that the Pirates just might be for real this year. SBNation's Rob Neyer is not a Buccaneer believer.
- Speaking of "for real," the Marlins are really that bad and Jeffrey Loria is laughing all the way to the bank.
- I don't know if he's "for real," but Chris Davis is a threat to win the Triple Crown this year, writes Jon Paul Morosi. The Orioles slugger would have a much better chance if Miguel Cabrera got traded to the National League.
- Mariners manager Eric Wedge, sort of, walks back his criticism of sabermetrics. In any case, he says he was taken out of context. He says he uses sabermetric analysis all the time.
- Have a good laugh watching Jason Giambi trying to steal third base.
- Jon Heyman notes that the Twins may have the best farm system in the majors. Certainly no team have two prospects like Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. They've got others with talent as well.
- Speaking of Heyman, the Athletics won't be inviting him to sit in the good seats at the Oakland Coliseum anytime soon. The players are upset that he took a swipe at their home.
- Scott Miller wonders if either the Dodgers or the Angels will put it together and make a run this season.
- Tim Brown explains why the late Dr. Lewis Yocum was so beloved in the game. With less than a month to live, he was still examining Roy Halladay and an unnamed Oriole.
- Shin-Soo Choo feels more comfortable playing center field.
- Red Sox manager John Farrell is a big reason for the Red Sox turnaround this season.
- Tony LaRussa thinks that Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti's best pupil has been Buster Posey.
- When Cameron Maybin returns from the disabled list in two weeks, the Padres have a choice to make on who to send down to the minors. The money is on Kyle Blanks, despite how well he's playing.
- Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla says Rockies fans no longer unconditionally support their team, and that's a good thing.
- Finally, Curtis Granderson has donated $5 million to his alma mater, the University of Illinois-Chicago, to build a new baseball stadium.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
