Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 9

Daytona snapped a losing streak, but Iowa and Tennessee lost. And Kane County didn't play. Again.

There was some movement in the minors today as Anthony Giansanti was promoted to Tennessee from Daytona, Wes Darvill and Chadd Krist joined Daytona from Kane County and Jeffrey Lorick joined the team from Extended Spring Training. Carlos Escobar and David Bote join Kane County from Extended Spring Training and Micah Gibbs was released.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were downed by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Rockies), 5-1.

Starter Drew Carpenter took the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits over five innings. One of those hits was a solo home run by former Cub DJ LeMahieu. Carpenter did strike out six and he only walked one.

The only Cubs run came on a solo home run by Darnell McDonald in the seventh inning, his second of the season. McDonald entered the game in a double-switch in the sixth and that was the only at-bat he had.

Left fielder Brett Jackson came off the DL from his bad toe and went 2 for 4. First baseman Brad Nelson was 2 for 4 with a double. Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a walk.

It was kind of old Cubs day today as the winning pitcher for the Sky Sox was Chris Volstad, who threw five shutout innings. Tyler Colvin was also 1 for 3 with a walk.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were forced to swear fealty to the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 9-7.

Alberto Cabrera had his worst start of the season, as he was hammered for six runs on thirteen hits over 4.1 innings. He walked three and struck out five.

The score was tied at 7-7 in the top of the ninth, but Trey McNutt allowed two runs in the top of the ninth for his third loss of the season. McNutt allowed two runs on one hit and two walks over 1.2 innings. One of the two runs in the top of the ninth was unearned. He struck out one.

The Smokies had a pair of two-run home runs today. The first was hit by DH Rafael Lopez in the bottom of the first, his second of the season. Lopez was 1 for 4 with a walk and he scored twice. In the fourth inning, right fielder Jonathan Mota hit his second home run of the year. Mota was 1 for 3 with a walk.

First baseman Tim Torres was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Catcher Jair Fernandez was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak by downing the Dunedin Blue Jays, 4-3.

Starter P.J. Francescon gave up three runs, two earned, over five innings. He surrendered eight hits, including one home run. Francescon struck out four and didn't walk anyone.

Jeffrey Lorick pitched in his first game of the year and he threw a perfect sixth inning, getting three ground outs. He got the win since Daytona took the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Hunter Cervenka had a clutch, two-inning save tonight. He allowed a single (and then a stolen base) with two out in the ninth, but that was the only baserunner he allowed. Cervenka struck out one.

Shortstop Javier Baez tripled in the bottom of the sixth with one out and then scored on a Jorge Soler sac fly to give Daytona the lead for good. Baez was 2 for 4 and also had an RBI double in addition to that triple. He also stole third base.

Left fielder John Andreoli went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored one run and batted one in. First baseman Dustin Geiger was 2 for 3 with an RBI single in the second inning.

DH Taiwan Easterling was 2 for 3.

Kane County Cougars

We're getting dangerously close to the moment where we all just tell the Midwest League to just forget it this season. Yet another rain ou.
