Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 25

Daytona continues to win and the Smokies get a big hit from Matt Szczur to win in extras. Iowa has no offense at all and the Cougars have trouble keeping the other team from scoring.

Man, it's June 25 already?

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were shut down by the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals), 7-0.

Iowa starter Yoanner Negrin allowed six runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was the game. Negrin only pitched two-thirds of an inning. He allowed six runs, four earned, on four hits. Negrin walked two and struck out two.

Three Memphis pitchers, led by seven innings from starter Tyler Lyons, faced the minimum 27 batters. The only baserunner was Jae-Hoon Ha, who singled in the first inning, but then got picked off first and thrown out trying to reach second base.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies outlasted the Jackson Generals (Mariners), 7-6 in 14 innings.

It was a rough start for Austin Kirk, who allowed four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Volunteer state native P.J. Francescon made his Double-A debut tonight in relief of Kirk. He surrendered one run on a hit and a walk over 2.1 innings.

After Frank Batista allowed a run and blew a save in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hunter Cervenka would eventually get the win. Cervenka faced five batters and retired all of them, four by striking them out.

The game ended in the bottom of the 14th inning when center fielder Matt Szczur doubled home second Ronald Torreyes from first. Szczur was 3 for 6 with a walk. He scored once and had one RBI.

DH Christian Villanueva hit a two-run home run in the second inning. It was his seventh home run of the season,. Villanueva was 1 for 6.

Third baseman Elliot Soto hit his second home run in two days, as well as his second home run of the season, in the third inning with the bases empty. Soto went 2 for 3.

First baseman Justin Bour had a double and a walk in a 2 for 5 game. Bour scored twice and had one run batted in.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs won their fourth in a row, throwing a wrench into the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 5-2.

Matt Loosen walked the first batter he faced and gave up a two-out, RBI double lated in the first inning. That would be the only run and only hit he would allow over the seven innings he pitched. The only other baserunner he allowed was a hit batsman to lead off the second inning. Loosen walked one and struck out eight.

Third baseman Wes Darvill was 2 for 4 with a two-run triple in the fourth inning. Darvill scored after the triple and had a third RBI on a single in the seventh inning.

Center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was 2 for 3 with a walk. He had one run batted in. Catcher Yaniel Cabezas went 2 for 4.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars lost their fifth game in a row, 9-5 to the Beloit Snappers. (Athletics)

A two-out error by third baseman Jeimer Candelario led to a five-run first inning off of starter Brian Smith. Smith only pitched the first inning and allowed the five unearned runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Smith walked one and struck out one.

At the plate, Candelario was 2 for 5 with an RBI and run scored. DH Rock Shoulders was also 2 for 5.

Center fielder Albert Almora had a pair of doubles in a 2 for 5 game.

Boise Hawks

The Hawks had their first rainout at home in nine years. They'll play a doubleheader tomorrow.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Giants 14-4..
