Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 29

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs calmed the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 8-5. The win moves Iowa over .500 for the first time this season at 42-41.

Starter Nick Struck evened his record at 5-5 when he allowed three runs on eight hits in his six inning start. Struck walked three and struck out one.

Brian Schlitter got his seventh save of the season, and it wasn't an easy one. He entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning, and Schlitter induced Chris Getz to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. Then Schlitter pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game. Schlitter allowed one hit over his 1.2 innings. He struck out two and walked nobody.

Second baseman Logan Watkins hit a solo home run in the third inning, his eighth home run of the season. Watkins went 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

First baseman Ty Wright gave Iowa two big insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning with his first Iowa home run this season. It was his fourth overall home run. Wright also doubled and hit a sacrifice fly in a 2 for 4 game. He had three total RBI.

DH Darnell McDonald was 2 for 5 with a double and a triple. He scored two runs. Right fielder Junior Lake went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI single in the sixth inning. Catcher J.C. Boscan went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies destroyed the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 13-0.

The Smokies staked starting pitcher Eric Jokisch 11 runs after three innings and he cruised to an easy victory. Jokisch allowed only three hits over 6.1 innings. Jokisch walked four and struck out seven.

Center fielder Rubi Silva hit a grand slam in the third inning, his tenth home run this year. Silva also doubled in a 3 for 5 game. He scored two times and had five total runs batted in.

Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara doubled twice in a 2 for 6 game. He had two runs batted in and scored once.

Right fielder John Andreoli was 3 for 5 with a double in his Double-A debut. Andreoli scored once and had two RBI.

First baseman Jonathan Mota was 3 for 4 and scored twice. Second baseman Ronald Torreyes was 2 for 5 and walked once. Torreyes scored three times.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were bitten by the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies), 3-2.

Pierce Johnson started and took the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. Johnson walked four and struck out three.

Shortstop Javier Baez was 1 for 4 with a stolen base. He had an RBI single in the first inning and then scored later in the first to account for both Daytona runs.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars lost an extremely wild game, 10-9 in eleven innings to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers).

Starter Felix Pena pitched six innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out two.

It was a rough game for Nathan Dorris, who took the loss. He took the mound in the bottom of the tenth inning after Kane County had scored twice in the top of the inning to take a 8-6 lead. But after a walk, a triple and a single, the score was tied.

Kane County retook the lead in the top of the eleventh, but then Norris allowed two singles and a double with one out to tie the game at nine. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Dorris induced a groundball to second baseman Gioskar Amaya who threw home for the second out. But catcher Carlos Escobar's throw to first base, going for the double play, went into right field and ended the game.

Dorris's final line was 1.2 innings pitched, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits. He walked two, one intentional, and struck out one.

Kane County had to score three runs in the top of the ninth to force the game into extra innings.

First baseman Daniel Vogelbach hit his 12th home run this season with the bases empty in the third inning. He also had an RBI single in the eleventh inning to give Kane County a 9-8 lead. Vogelbach was 2 for 5 with a walk.

Right fielder Kevin Encarnacion was 2 for 4 with a walk in his first game for Kane County. He scored once and had one RBI.

Left fielder Reggie Golden went 3 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored twice. Second baseman Gioskar Amaya was 3 for 5 with a double. He had one RBI and one run scored.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 6 with a double and a run scored.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks polished the Eugene Emeralds (Padres), 8-6.

Starting pitcher Trey Lang allowed four runs on five hits over only 2.2 innings. One of the four runs was unearned. He walked four and only struck out one.

Corbin Hoffner got his first professional win with 3.1 innings of relief of Lang. Hoffner allowed only one unearned on one hit. He walked two and struck out four.

Tyler Bremer got a two inning save, his first of the season. Bremer allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk. he struck out four.

Right fielder Yasiel Balaguert hit his third home run in the bottom of the first inning with a man on to give Boise and early 2-0 lead. Balaguert went 2 for 5.

David Bote went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored three runs and had one RBI.

Center fielder Shawon Dunston went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI single. He exited the game after his double in the fourth inning, but he took to Twitter tonight to explain that he was simply dehydrated and had an upset stomach.
