Cubs vs. Rockies Preview, Sunday 7/21, 3:10 CT: Matt Garza Is Still A Cub

If you're sitting around waiting for Matt Garza to be traded, I'm thinking you're going to be waiting a while longer.

Justin Edmonds

It's looking more and more as if Matt Garza is going to make his scheduled start, Monday in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Here's the latest from Jon Heyman:

The Rangers and Cubs were set back on the Matt Garza talks to the point where the Rangers are now viewed as only one of many teams now in the mix for the star righthander.

The impressions left now is Texas and Chicago made no progress in overcoming the snag that derailed a deal for Garza Friday night -- though the Rangers aren't eliminated as both sides are still looking for deals. Yahoo first reported about the snag.

In other words, nothing's happening. Or everything. Pretty much the same as yesterday. You might as well watch today's game while you're waiting.

Cubs lineup:

Valbuena 3B, Castro SS, Rizzo 1B, Soriano LF, Schierholtz RF, Lake CF, Barney 2B, Castillo C, Jackson P

If Junior Lake plays four more games in the outfield for the Cubs -- and that seems likely -- he'll have played more OF games in the major leagues this year than he did in his entire minor-league career.

Rockies lineup:

Fowler CF, Blackmon RF, Tulowitzki SS, Gonzalez LF, Cuddyer 1B, Arenado 3B, Torrealba C, Herrera 2B, Chatwood P

Edwin Jackson had the best start of his Cubs tenure in his final outing before the All-Star break. That's the good news. Here's the bad news: current members of the Rox are hitting .481 (!) against him. Small sample size, but 26-for-54 is pretty bad. Here's the worse news: lifetime in Coors Field, Jackson has made four starts, thrown 15 innings, allowed 34 hits and 10 walks, and has an ERA of 17.40. Really, you shouldn't even look at those numbers; your eyes might bleed.

Tyler Chatwood has never faced the Cubs. He's faced just one player on the active roster (Nate Schierholtz, 1-for-4). He's been pretty good this year for the Rockies, though has gone more than six innings just once (in his last start before the All-Star break). He doesn't walk nor strike out a lot of hitters, and has given up just two home runs in 70⅓ innings this year. Clearly, we are doomed.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Rockies site Purple Row.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
