Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs fell to the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros), 4-3.
It was a good start for Brooks Raley, who allowed only two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. Raley walked three and struck out two.
Henry Rodriguez allowed a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth to take the loss. He allowed a triple to lead off the bottom of the ninth and then threw a game-ending wild pitch with his next pitch. Rodriguez allowed the two runs on two hits and a walk. He did not have a strikeout.
Right fielder Ty Wright hit a solo home run and had a two-out RBI single in the 8th inning to give Iowa a short-lived 3-2 lead. Wright was 2 for 4.
Second baseman Logan Watkins was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. First baseman Edgar Gonzalez was 2 for 4. Center fielder Darnell McDonald was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies burned the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 8-4 in game two of the five-game series that the Smokies are calling the "Chitown Showdown."
Really strong start for Dae-Eun Rhee, who improved his record to 4-0 on the season. He gave up two runs, both on a home run in the seventh inning that was the last batter he faced. Rhee only allowed two hits over 6.1 innings. Rhee walked one (just before the home run) and struck out five.
Most of the offense came from second baseman Arismendy Alcantara, who had four RBI thanks to a pair of two-run singles in a 3 for 4 game. Alcantara also walked once.
Catcher Rafael Lopez provided much of the rest of the punch, as he was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Lopez scored two runs and had two RBI.
Third baseman Christian Villanueva went 2 for 4 and scored once.
The win puts Tennessee back in first place with a one-game lead over Birmingham.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs were parted by the Ft. Myers Miracle (Twins), 5-0.
Scott Baker showed some improvement in his first Daytona rehab start, but he still took the loss. Baker pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits, including a solo home run by Matt Koch. The other run Baker allowed was unearned. Baker walked two and struck out two.
Center fielder Zeke DeVoss went 3 for 4 with two doubles. He had three of Daytona's five hits.
Kane County Cougars
The Kane County Cougars were blasted by the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 14-1.
Starter Jose Rosario took one for the team, apparently as he was blasted for 13 runs on 13 hits over 4.1 innings. He walked four and struck out only one as his record dropped to 0-7.
The only Cougars run scored on a solo home run by DH Dan Vogelbach in the sixth inning. It was his 16th of the year. Vogelbach was 1 for 4.
The only other highlight for the Cougars was when they turned a triple-play in the second inning on a line out to shortstop Giuseppe Papaccio, who then threw to second baseman Gioskar Amaya for the second out and Amaya threw to first baseman Rock Shoulders.
Sometimes I miss the days when my recap on a game like this was just "Nothing to see here. Move along."
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks lost to the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 5-2 in 11 innings.
Tyler Skulina became the first Cubs 2013 draft pick to go three innings tonight, and he didn't allow a run in his three-inning start. He gave up two hits but he didn't walk anyone and he struck out two.
Loiger Padron allowed only one hit over three innings of relief, but unfortunately it was a solo home run. Padron struck out four and didn't walk anyone.
Carlos Martinez-Pumarino took the loss when he was charged with three runs, two earned, in the top of the eleventh inning. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave up three hits. He walked two and struck out two.
The Hawks only had two hits, but walked nine times. The Indians had a no-hitter going until a Jose Dore single in the seventh inning broke it up. Third baseman Kris Bryant went 1 for 4 with an RBI double and a walk.
